This original Saint-Uze milk urn is very rare. They are often copied, but this is the real thing. It would originally have had a wire handle, that has long perished. Paired with a near matching patterned Tureen.
Saint-Uze pottery comes from the village of Saint-Uze in the Drome department in south eastern France. Popular in the 19th and early 20th century, potters used local soil rich in kaolin and feldspar to create a strong stoneware often called "terre d'acier".
This is a very old and well used item with many decades of use. As such, it has age-related marks, scratches and scrapes which enhance its rustic appeal. One lid does have an old repair.
