This pair of Saint-Uze tureens have a distinct matching blue pattern, which differs from the usual floral motif. The hand stamps on one are not aligned, perhaps made on a friday afternoon or after a traditional long French lunch!
Saint-Uze pottery comes from the village of Saint-Uze in the Drome department in south eastern France. Popular in the 19th and early 20th century, potters used local soil rich in kaolin and feldspar to create a strong stoneware often called "terre d'acier". The patterns are all hand stamped using rubber stamps, creating unique patterns that vary from piece to piece.

This is a very old and well used item with many decades of use. As such, it has age-related marks, scratches and scrapes which enhance its rustic appeal.
