This Antique French Cul Noir (Black butt) bowl has a lovely handprinted floral design and beautiful crackled glaze.
Dating from the 19th Century, Cul Noir pottery is from around Rouen in Northern France. It features a distinctive brown glaze on the underside (containing manganese which gives it the colour) and a white glaze on the upper surface.
This is a very old and well used item with many decades of use. As such, it has age-related marks, scratches and scrapes which enhance its rustic appeal.
