Made in the South West of France, this antique earthenware oil jug has plenty of character.
Known as a 'Bonbonne saintongeais', these were handmade in Saintonge region of France. Likely made in La Chapelle-des-Pots, a commune in South West France, in the Charente-Maritime department, in the heart of the old Saintonge region. Originally it was sealed with a cork stopper.
The top half has a green glaze with great patterns from wear, various marks and indentations and a beautiful patina. The bottom half is unglazed.
This is a very old and well used item with many decades of use. As such, it has age-related marks, scratches and scrapes which enhance its rustic appeal. It has not been tested for water-tightness, and is sold as a decorative object.
